Fuel Cell Engineering

Wolfgang Winkler is Professor for energy technology at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. After an industrial career in boiler engineering, and different management positions in power industry he joined his university as a professor in 1990. Here he started his work on fuel cell technology mainly based on thermodynamics and process engineering. The actual research activities cover the design and development activities including process simulation and experimental evaluation of fuel cell systems onboard ships and onboard aircraft. He published more than hundred papers and edited or contributed to 5 books. He gave guest lectures at the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras and organised a number of national and international conferences on fuel cells as a chairman. He is chairman of the VDI (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure) committee on "fuel cells", secretary of the international standardisation committee IEC TC 105 "Fuel Cell Technology", member of the scientific advisory group of the EU JRC Institute for Energy in Petten and other national and international fuel cell organisations and involved in different EU funded R&D activities and projects on fuel cells.

Mark C. Williams received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering in 1985 from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Williams is the author of over two hundred papers and articles in various peer-reviewed technical journals, society proceedings, book chapters, encyclopedia chapters and other publications. With Dr. Alan Lloyd, the California EPA Secretary, he received the inaugural U.S. Fuel Cell Council's Pathfinder Award in 2003 for eighteen years of dedicated leadership to the fuel cell industry. In 2005 he became a Fellow of The Electrochemical Society "for sustained, internationally recognized contributions to and promotion of electrochemical energy conversion technologies, especially fuel cells". In 2006 he was an ASM Visiting Lecturer to India. In 2007 he was a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Fellow working with AIST on exergetic studies of intermediate temperature MIEC electrolytes. He has been instrumental in formulating the fuel cell programs of the U.S. Department of Energy, Taiwan and Austria. Dr. Williams serves as on the Board of the Fuel Cell Seminar and on the Boards of Advisers of fuel cell-related entities. In addition, he serves as the Chief Technology Officer of an incipient fuel cell company. He is now Adjunct Professor, University of Utah.
