Description
The Later Tudors tells the story of England between the accession of Edward VI and the death of Elizabeth I. The second half of the sixteenth century was a period of intense conflict between the nations of Europe, and between competing Catholic and Protestant beliefs. These struggles produced acute anxiety in England, but the nation was saved from the disasters that befell her neighbours and, by the end of Elizabeth's reign, had achieved a remarkable sense of political and religious identity. In this masterly and comprehensive study, Penry Williams explains how this process came about. He begins by weaving together the political, religious, and economic history of the nation, setting out the workings and development of the English state. Later chapters establish the broader perspective, with a thorough analysis of English society, family relations, and culture, focusing on the ways in which art and literature were used to uphold - and sometimes to subvert - the social and political order. The final chapter looks to Europe and across the seas at England's part in the shaping of the New World.
Reviews / Votes
Williams has produced a thoughtful, well-written, and graceful survey...A signal strength of Williams' volume is his careful integration of Irish with English history... the interweaving of domestic and foreign history into one continuous narrative is a welcome and useful departure from the organization of the first Oxford History of England... Williams has given us a model of the survey genre and a picture of the state of later Tudor scholarship in the 1990s that will serve well for years to come. * Lamar M. Hill, Albion * Penry Williams enlivens the traditional formula of an Oxford history without sacrifice of authority * Felipe Fernandez-Armesto, The Independent * Well produced, with good maps and illustrations at a very reasonable price. It should hold its own for some time... the best account for the serious reader * History Today * Williams has done a proper historical job, and the effect is to give a powerful sense of accumulated real life, real thought and real talent. * London Review of Books * The chief strengths of the book are its narrative pace and cool assessment of personalities and policies...The erudition is impressive...Highly recommended for upper-division undergraduates and above. * D.R. Bisson, Belmont University, Choice * Williams is an experienced and innovative commentator on this period: his Tudor Regime...was a landmark study of the mechanisms of Tudor government, and the present work brings many of the admirable qualities of that work to the new study...Williams keeps control of the material with admirable skill...Williams is very good (as one would expect) on the structures of government, but also succeeds admirably in his chapters on the family...It is a humane and even-tempered book about an age which was often neither. * Parliamentary History * Displays all the virtues his admirers would expect from Penry Williams: clarity of expression, methodical surveys, judicious conclusions...Dr Williams's overall judgements are measured. * G.W. Bernard, University of Southampton, English Historical Review *More details
