Brain Disorders: Biological Mechanisms

Brain disorders refer to the conditions which impair the normal functioning of the brain. These can range from trauma, tumors, infections and stroke. Trauma encompasses concussion and traumatic brain injury. A concussion causes a short term disruption in the brain while traumatic brain injury entails a permanent damage to the brain. Some of the different infections which can affect the brain are meningitis, brain abscess and encephalitis. Tumors in the brain can be either benign or malignant. Both of them can cause problems in the normal functioning of the brain by exerting pressure on it. They can also be classified as primary brain tumors and secondary tumors. While primary tumors can be either benign or malignant, secondary tumors are always malignant in nature.
