Ida B. Wells (1862-1931) was an American investigative journalist, civil rights activist, and suffragist who became one of the most influential voices against racial injustice in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born into slavery in Holly Springs, Mississippi, she was emancipated following the Civil War and later became a teacher before turning to journalism.
Wells gained national and international recognition for her fearless investigative reporting on the brutal practice of lynching in the American South, compiling detailed statistical studies that challenged prevailing racial narratives. She co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909 and was a founding member of several civil rights organizations.
