Reviews / Votes
In this insightful book, Barney Warf explores the role social relations play in the construction of economic landscapes. His approach foregrounds casual processes of capital accumulation that lie behind the production of wealth, poverty, and uneven development. The emphasis that is placed on developing an historical understanding of economic geography is to be welcomed. This book is essential reading for all economic geography students and also business and management students who want to understand how the landscapes of capitalism have been shaped, reshaped and continue to change. This text contains numerous examples from across the US to explores processes and procedures that are reshaping the economic geography landscapes that we all inhabit. Barney Warf's text covers the major processes that are shaping the landscapes of capitalism in a readable manner. In so doing, he challenges the reader to ask and answer the relevant questions regarding the on-going configuration of economic geography landscapes. * John R. Bryson, The University of Birmingham * A solid and thoughtfully structured overview of the field and a useful resource for those seeking a broad understanding of evolving geographies of global economies... It distinguishes itself from other economic geography textbooks through its global scope and rich empirical illustrations, including examples of the restructuring of manufacturing, the expansion of service economies, and the impact of digital technologies. It is a timely volume relevant to current social and policy concerns, such as deindustrialization, U.S. trade deficits, and digital divide. * Dennis Wei, University of Utah * This book offers a comprehensive introduction to economic geography from a political economy perspective. It organizes the field around capitalism and the world economy, moving from core concepts to sectoral patterns and recent transformations. The material is presented in a way that students can follow while engaging with key analytical ideas, making it suitable for undergraduate courses in economic geography. * Enru Wang, University of North Dakota *More details
