Description
This 'Special Issue' of Developmental Neuroscience highlights cutting-edge research on the clinical detection of perinatal brain injury, its pathophysiology, and strategies for neuroprotection from both clinical and basic science perspectives. Information obtained using preclinical animal models reveals the impact of hypoxia-ischemia on metabolism, neuroinflammation, and oxidative stress on the outcome of developmental brain injury and ultimate neurological effects. Several papers report preclinical tests of new therapies showing promise in preventing injury to the developing brain. Other studies evaluate the mechanisms of protection afforded by hypothermia with and without adjunct therapies. In addition, new clinical methods and potential new biomarkers for evaluating early damage to the neonate are described. This 'Special Issue' will be of interest to all those interested in the developing nervous system, its vulnerability to various pathophysiological processes, and the eventual consequences for neurologic development. This 'Special Issue' includes contributions from developmental neuroscientists, pediatric neurologists, obstetricians, neonatologists, and radiologists.
