Description
The fifth edition of this reference work has been compiled with the contributions of seven subject specialists, who are building on and extending the work of Dr Walford. As with other long-running, successful works of reference, "Walford's Guide to Reference Material" has moved with the times. In the fifth edition the data capture, arrangement and typesetting of the work and the production of author, title and subject indexes have all been full automated. As ever, critical annotations and "reviewers'" comments accompany the citations. The entries are selective and evaluative in order to guide the enquirer to the best source of reference in each subject area, whether that source be a journal article, a textbook, a database, a bibliography, a progress report or a monograph. The subject arrangement is based on the Universal Decimal Classification BS1000M 1985. A very full subject index stresses the importance of the subject arrangement. Almost ten years have elapsed since the publication of the fourth edition of volume 1 of the "Guide".
Complete overhaul has been necessary, involving a virtual rewriting of the entries which have increased to a total of about 6000, including about 1000 secondary items. Use of the UDC classification in the "Guide" now embraces such topics as biotechnology, artificial intelligence, small businesses, robots, biomass energy and organic farming.
