1.1 Schwerpunktthema
Das Schwerpunktthema lautet "Exploring the missing pieces - Ränder und Grenzen von Trockenheits- und Nutzungsgradienten mitteleuropäischer Wälder und ihrer Baumarten", denn wir reisen nach Rumänien, um all das anzuschauen, was Biodiversitäts-Experten und Waldklimaforscher in Deutschland vermissen:
Nutzungsgradienten sind in Deutschland eingeengt, Urwald und präindustrielle Kulturlandschaft sind verlorengegangen. In Rumänien sind sie noch mit aussagekräftigen Beispielen anzutreffen.
Um klimatische Trockengrenzen mitteleuropäischer Baumarten zu studieren, sind die warm-trockenen Hügellagen Rumäniens sehr aussagekräftig. Am Rande der Vorkommen bilden die "Konkurrierer" der mitteleuropäischen Buchen- und Hainbuchenwälder trockenheitsangepasste / akklimatisierte Modifikationen aus, um die Stressfolgen zu verringern und werden schließlich jenseits ihrer Trockengrenzen von "Stresstolerierern" der südosteuropäischen Zerreichen- und Balkaneichen-Wälder abgelöst.

1.1 Theme
The theme of this excursion is "Exploring the missing pieces - the extremes of drought and management gradients for Central European forests and their tree species", as we will travel to Romania to find examples of forests that are missing from the picture in Germany:
Management gradients have contracted in Germany, and virgin forest and pre-industrial cultural landscapes have been lost. In Romania, however, excellent examples of both of these can still be found.
The warm and dry hilly areas of Romania provide instructive examples with which to study the climatic drought limits of Central European tree species. At the limits of their ranges, the highly competitive beech and hornbeam forests occur as drought-adapted types in order to reduce the effects of drought stress. Beyond their drought limit, these are then replaced by stress-tolerant forests of Turkey oak and Hungarian oak.
