Description
This book, designed for students who have already developed a basic competence in Russian, aims to broaden and improve their vocabulary by providing detailed information on groups of Russian words with related meanings. It is invaluable as a guide to finding the right word for the context. In order to enhance understanding of the structure of the Russian vocabulary, groups of synonyms are organised under Russian (rather than English) headwords. All entries are accompanied by examples of usage and English glosses and there are two indexes allowing users quickly to locate words in Russian or English. The book takes full account of register variation, indicating the degree of formal or informal use. It is an essential reference for college students and undergraduates as well as teachers and other professional linguists seeking access to the finer nuances of the Russian language.
Reviews / Votes
'... the authors provide a guide to modern usage for students and teachers, with definitions and examples. Russian and English indexes enable you to find the meaning group you need. The introduction to the book is essential reading; most important, it includes a description of Russian styles and registers, as well as the expected discussion of synonyms and synonym dictionaries.' Rusistika 'What an impressive volume: massive in its scope, a veritable thesaurus, it will repay hours of study and provide intellectual enjoyment for pupils and students of Russian, teachers, lecturers and practising translators, helping them to expand their vocabulary, improve their style and avoid repetition ... clearly set out and easy to use. This book is a delight to browse through as well as to use for serious study. The high standard of scholarship is what we have come to expect from these experienced authors.' Exam NewsMore details
