intellectual background with figures such as Joseph Conrad and John Galsworthy who were frequent visitors to the school.
The book explains the ethos of study, Christian faith, high sporting achievement and good manners that have long given the school its special quality, and brings the story right up to the present day.

Hugo Vickers is well known as a biographer, lecturer and broadcaster, and is an acknowledged expert on the Royal Family. He is always called upon to commentate on important state occasions, and at times when the Royal Family are in the news. He has covered events from the first wedding of the Prince of Wales, the funerals of Diana, the Queen Mother, Prince Philip, and Queen Elizabeth II and many royal weddings. The Financial Times recently described him as: 'the most knowledgeable royal biographer on the planet.'
He is a Deputy Lieutenant for the Royal County of Berkshire and Captain of the Lay Stewards of St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. He lives in London and Wiltshire and has three grown-up children, two of whom are Old Boys of Elstree.
