Deploying Wireless Internet Service Providers

Wireless internet service providers (WISPs) are not the same as wireless local area networks (WLANs). WLANs are "closed" systems intended to be used only by members of a specific business or other organization, while WISPs are "open" systems available to the public on a free basis (such as the free WiFi access offered by libraries, coffeeshops and restaurants, hotels, etc.), on an ad-supported basis (such as Google's new WiFi service), or on a subscription plan like DSL and cable internet. This comprehensive guide covers the technical, legal and regulatory, organizational, financial, and operational details of planning, implementing, and managing a "free" or for-profit WISP.
