Hermann Ullstein was born in 1875, the youngest of the five famous sons of Leopold Ullstein, the founder of the publishing dynasty. He joined the family business in 1920, where he pioneered modern advertising, writing a fundamental textbook on the subject, Wirb und werde! Ein Lehrbuch der Reklame exemplifying his motto: "Whoever does not want to be bored must be original." In 1939, he was forced to emigrate and settled in New York, where he died in 1943.
