Anna and Paul are bound by a love so deep and politics so dangerous, it seems nothing can come between them. But they are a mixed-race couple in the underground resistance in apartheid-riven South Africa. One evening, Paul and a comrade set off for a meeting at which they never arrive. Their butchered bodies are found on the roadside next to their burnt-out car. For Anna it is the end of the world but, sustained by Paul's love, she fights for justice and the truth about his murder. Ten years later the identity of Paul's killer is still a mystery, but Anna brings the case to the Truth Commission. There she encounters James Kay, a hard-bitten, cynical journalist with information that turns her life upside down. Anna embarks on a dangerous journey through South Africa, deep into terror, conspiracy and the mind of the man she thought she knew best in the world.
