Sturtevant

"My intentions are to extend and develop our present notion of aesthetics, to investigate originality and to examine the relation between original and origins; opening up space for new thinking". (Elaine Sturtevant) This claim is surprising at first as it comes from an artist who is best known for reproducing works by other artists. In her debut solo exhibition in New York in 1965, she exhibited her "copies" of; Andy Warhol's Flowers, Jasper John's Flag pictures, a soft sculpture by Laes Oldenburg and a drawing by James Rosenquidst, which all claimed to be originals. The book, conceived by Sturtevant herself, includes recent works and provides a detailed look at the artist's sophisticated play with issues of originality, authorship and signature.
