Europe is going through a period of dramatic development, bringing fundamental change to the countries on the continent. The integration process that started in the west is expanding eastwards and the European Union is gradually growing. But there is a simultaneous trend towards disinte-gration with an increased number of nationalist strivings of the traditional kind, especially in the eastern parts. Although we can trace these evolvements, it is difficult to foresee the future structures. Are we going to have a politically, economically and culturally united Europe, or is the integra-tion process going to slow down and come to a halt?
