Description
Learn how to capture the effects of radiant light and shadow in oil! In this insightful 32-page book, accomplished painter Tom Swimm shows aspiring artists how to recognize and express the dynamic effects of light in luminous oil paintings. Tom demonstrates how to get started through sketching, toning a support, and establishing a value underpainting. He then explains special techniques, such as portraying light and shadows, expressing time of day, and rendering reflective surfaces. He also reveals tricks on creating brilliant compositionsfrom simplifying complex subjects and creating bold textures to telling a compelling story through a seemingly ordinary scene. Best of all, the vivid, full-color illustrations and innovative tips from the artist inspire readers to infuse their own paintings with light and color.

Person
Tom Swimm has felt an instinctive need to paint since his early childhood. Although he is self-taught, he has long been inspired by the work of Van Gogh, Monet, and Hopper, and he considers these masters his teachers. Tom's first one-man exhibition was at the Pacific Edge Gallery in Laguna Beach, California. His work has also been displayed in several other California galleries, at ArtExpo New York, and at the APPAF Exhibition in Paris, France. His paintings have also appeared on the cover of Skyward Marketing's in-flight magazine in 2001, as well as on the cover of Artist's Magazine in 1992. And Tom's work is currently featured in several Walter Foster Publishing titles
