The training package contains all the resources needed to deliver the training sessions, including: detailed notes for the trainer presentations handouts. Presentations, handouts and any other editable resources are provided on a CD-ROM. Introduction Why does coaching matter? What does coaching mean? This section provides an introduction to core concepts and overview of the training course. Training Session 1 - What is coaching and why use it? The aim of this session is for participants to understand what coaching is, how it differs from mentoring and how it can be used to support them on a personal, team and whole-school level. By the end of the session participants will be able to: describe to others at least three clear features of coaching give at least three ways that coaching differs from mentoring decide on at least five preferred and clear benefits of coaching for pupils, staff, the school and the coach. Training Session 2 - What are the skills of coaching? This session focuses on understanding and practicing the three core skills of coaching: listening, questioning and reviewing. The session will enable participants to: appreciate the importance of the three core skills of coaching understand what makes for good and bad listening ask good coaching questions ask questions that help the coach and the coachee to review, reflect and clarify throughout a coaching session. Training Session 3 - How can I become a great coach? Part 1 The aim of this session is for participants to understand how the GROW (Goal, Reality, Options and Will) model can support their development and practice as a coach. Participants will start to practice their coaching skills, taking on the role of coach, coachee and observer. By the end of the session, participants will: have experience of coaching from the point of view of being a coach, a coachee and an observer have practiced using great coaching questions understand the GROW model and to have experienced the Goal and Reality stages from the point of view of being a coach, coachee and observer. Training Session 4 - How can I become a great coach? Part 2 The aim of this session is for participants to deepen their understanding of how the GROW model supports their development and practice as a coach. By the end of this session participants will: have further experience of coaching from the point of view of being a coach, a coachee and an observer have practiced using great coaching questions understand the GROW model and have experienced the Options and Will stages from the point of view of being a coach, coachee and observer. Training Session 5 - What are the powerful coaching tools that I can use? Part 1 This session introduces four coaching tools that can be used at various stages of the coaching process, including the balance wheel and a rating scale. As a result of this session, participants will: understand how to use the tools understand when to use the different tools have practiced using the tools and feel comfortable with how they work. Training Session 6 - What are the powerful coaching tools that I can use? Part 2 In this session participants will practice using four more coaching tools. These include bisociation, viewpoints and a motivational record. As a result of this session, participants will: understand how to use the tools understand when to use the different tools have practiced using the tools and feel comfortable with how they work. Appendix - Coaching in your school How do you ensure that coaching continues in your school? This section provides practical guidance and models for establishing a coaching culture. Evaluation An editable form is provided to support users in evaluating the impact of the training. Guidance is given in every session about next steps for development and how to measure the outcomes of the training.
