Description
Although Britain occupies only a sliver of the Earth's crust - a mere one and a half percent of the world's land area - it boasts a remarkable diversity of geology. Every major division of geological time is represented in the rocks of England, Scotland and Wales. From the gnarled Lewisian gneisses of the Scotland's northwest to the stripling Quaternary lowlands of the Norfolk Broads and the London basin, Geologica Britannica traces the 3000-million-year evolution of the unique landscape of the island of Britain.
Above all, Geologica Britannica reveals what our geology has meant for us - for our nation's industrial and technological development, its architecture and buildings, its cultural and artistic roots, its creation of a sense of region and place. Ultimately, Geologica Britannica is the story of the intersection of people, rocks and landscape.
