The Politics of European Union Policy
Description
By opening up the 'black box' of EU policymaking, this accessible and engaging textbook introduces the processes through which EU policy is made and shaped, extending beyond decision making in Brussels to highlight the crucial roles of national capitals, subnational governments, citizens, civil society groups, political parties and elected representatives in addressing real concerns from the regulation of AI to environmental and social policy and the right to move freely in the EU.
Demonstrating how policymaking must navigate competing interests and beliefs, with divergent perspectives playing such important roles throughout, this new introduction offers a comprehensive overview of EU policy suitable for students at advanced undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Bernard Steunenberg is Professor Emeritus of Public Administration at the University of Leiden, Netherlands.

Person
Bernard Steunenberg is very well-known in this field. Bernard is a renowned expert with good practitioner connections and enjoys external-facing work (e.g. advising governments, citizen-impact and wider outreach). He's a good fit for this text in terms of his expertise (theory-driven and Public Administration focus) as well as his network (very close links to policy practitioners in Brussels), which will offer us good routes to market and credibility in this space. Crucial for texts doing well in this market is a firm grasp of how policy works 'inside'. Content wise, we'll be making the most of his contacts by including practitioner perspectives within the book - and this close link gives us an additional practitioner market to tap into. He's planning to make use of his large community, and has agreed to support this text at the major EU Politics conferences and promoting to his networks to build initial sales.
