On Top of the World

In May 1993, Rebecca Stephens became the first British woman to climb Everest. This book tells the story of that climb. Her interest in climbing came late considering this triumph, when, as a journalist, she accompanied an Anglo-American expedition on Everest's North East Ridge in 1989. Her interest grew and in four years of climbing she scaled some of the world's major peaks: Mont Blanc, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and Mount McKinley. Here, she gives a step-by-step account of the preparation - physicial and psychological - for her feat on Everest, telling of the difficulties and fears during the climb, as well as the elation she felt on the summit of the world's highest mountain.
