Description
The assessment of structural integrity is a vitally important consideration in many fields of engineering, which has an influence on the full range of professional activities from conception, design and analysis, through operation to residual life evaluation and possible life extension. In devising satisfactory procedures for this purpose there is a clear need for interaction and information exchange across this broad spectrum of activities.
This conference provided the forum for this exchange of expertise and knowledge among engineers from diverse professional backgrounds and disciplines. The conference was run under the auspices of the Engineering Integrity Society and the Dynamic Testing Agency and was co-sponsored by the British Society for Strain Measurement, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Joint British Committee for Stress Analysis and the National Agency for Finite Element Methods and Standards.
The papers presented are relevant to practitioners in power generation, aerospace, transport, offshore, process and construction engineering.

Content
High temperature design. Simplified methods of structural analysis for high temperature integrity assessment. Rules for the prevention of ratcheting (cyclic strain growth in thin cylindrical shells - including creep). Fracture parameter maps for high temperature components.
On-site testing and case studies. Instrumentation and monitoring of diurnal temperature effects in a concrete box-girder bridge. Creep study of a glued segmental bridge. Field monitoring used in the structural assessment of a novel form of precast concrete silo. Construction industry case histories. Spectral analysis of wind loading on a tower crane.
Testing and validation. Finite element modelling of impact damaged carbon fibre laminates. Redistribution of residual stresses in welds due to proof loading and heat treatment. The ratcheting behaviour of fabricated piping branch junctions under steady internal pressure and simulated sismic run-pipe in-plane bending. An experimental determination of the limitations of routine dynamic testing of structural components. The structural assessment and testing of a filler beam bridge deck.
Environmental engineering methods. An environmental engineering rationale under development for the qualification of defence equipment. Eureka project 420 'ENVIB' using tailoring for environmental vibration testing.
Methodology and procedures. An overview of plant structural integrity assessment. An overview of some structural integrity assessment procedures and the environmental programmes supporting them. The engineering assessment workbench. Fire and blast response of jacket topsides. Analysis of modern coach and bus structures.
Vibration testing and damage assessment. The use of vibration data and model updating to detect damage. On-line system identification techniques for structural analysis and monitoring. Application of transformed normal modes for damage location in structures. Structural degradation of thin elastic rotation shells. Integration of structural dynamics and fatigue analysis. Dynamic ultrasonic damage indicators and applications to advanced composite materials. Testing of large structures using vibration techniques. Acoustic emission and ultrasonic testing of concrete structures. The effect of reinforcement corrosion on the strength of reinforced concrete members.
Fatigue and fracture. Separation and fracture of inclusions in multi-phase materials and ceramics. The effect of superimposed vibrational stresses on fatigue crack propagation life. Hillsborough: some implications for structural integrity. Reliability fatigue fracture mechanics analysis of the multiple site cracking in offshore welded tubular joints. Tests to investigate the performance of fatigue gauges in conjunction with fillet welded joints in Al Zn Mg alloys. Practical application of low cycle (high strain) fatigue concept to a nuclear plant duct under earthquake loading.
Design analysis. Stresses in cylindrical pressure vessels due to local loads. Dynamic considerations of flexible foundations for turbogenerators. Inelastic buckling of haunched composite beams. Index.
