Jerry Spinelli is the author of many critically acclaimed and best-selling books for young readers, including Stargirl. He is a winner of the Newbery Medal for his 'distinguished contribution to American Literature for Children. He grew up in Norristown, Pennsylvania, where he dreamed of becoming a major league baseball player. This all changed when he was sixteen however, when a poem he wrote about a football game was published in a local newspaper. From then on, he wanted to be a writer.
