Providing Materials for Library Users

The change in title for this sixth edition of "Book Selection" reflects a move towards a more inclusive approach to reflect the realities of the principles and practice of selecting materials for library users. The text provides guidance on basic selection procedures for both print-based and electronic materials, and it also covers the provision vs access debate. Key strategies and techniques covered include: selection policy; budgeting; assessing users' requirements; logistics, weeding, stock revision and performance measurement; and evaluating materials. The requirements of certain categories of "special materials" are then considered in the light of these strategies and techniques. Particular attention is paid to serials, audio-visual materials, paperbacks, foreign language materials and out-of-print materials.
