This fifth edition of "Biology" has an increased emphasis on the process of science by integrating more historical context, references to specific scientists, their research stories and experimental data. New examples inlcuded are: topics in cell biology, such as cell signalling, molecular chaperones, cloning technology, genetic discrimination and telometric DNA; topics in evolution and diversity, such as testing evolutionary hypotheses experimentally, hybridization of cichlids in Lake Victoria, experimental evidence of inbreeding depression in nature, new fossil finds of early apes and hominids, cladistics, chytridiomycetes and plant evolution; topics in ecology, such as competition as an ecological determinant of community structure, experimental evidence of the individualistic model of community structure, the relationship between productivity and biological diversity, UN and IIASA human population projections, the relationship among human population growth, resource consumption and environmental degradation; an animal biology chapters with content revisions including, nervous systems, internal defence, endocrine, regulation, development and animal behaviour.
