Joseph "Joe" Smith was born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1952, the fifth of ten children. He studied business management at the University of Louisville, where he graduated with high honors in 1978. Simultaneously, Joe worked in the plastics industry. He continued his work in this industry for 34 years in various managerial positions in different locations throughout the United States. Joe currently resides in Louisville, Kentucky, having returned there in 2024 after an absence of forty-one years. During those forty-one years, he lived in California, North Carolina, and spent thirty years in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He has two adult children who live in the greater Chattanooga area.
