Introduction An overview of the issues around performance management, written for the member of staff delivering the training. Training session 1: Performance management and the law This training session, aimed at senior leaders and governors, will enable participants to understand the implications of the September 2012 arrangements and the importance of investing time in a robust performance management process. Training session 2: Performance management - the process This training session, aimed at members of staff responsible for the performance management of colleagues, gives detailed training in three areas: setting targets monitoring progress reviewing targets. Training session 3: Challenging underperformance This training session equips middle and senior leaders with information regarding the legal aspects of the capability process and with tools for challenging underperformance. Discussions cover different approaches for 'can't' and 'won't' scenarios and the use of support plans. Training session 4: Performance management and school improvement This training session helps school leaders to strengthen the links between performance management and school improvement or development plans. Performance management is put into the context of ongoing action plans and the everyday classroom experience. Evaluation A customisable form is provided to support users in evaluating the impact of the training. Guidance is given in every session about next steps for development and how to measure the outcomes of the training.
