The late HAROLD SHUKMAN was a British historian, academic and author. Born in London to a family of Jewish immigrants escaping from the Russian Empire, Harold spent his academic career pursuing Jewish and Russian history, becoming the director of the Russian centre at St Antony's College, Oxford. He retired in 1998.
