Description
From 1909 to 1914 John Garstang explored Meroë, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Kush, which is situated about 220 kilometers north of the city Khartoum in today's Sudan. He discovered 1912 the socalled Royal Baths. Garstang had to terminate his work because of the World War I. and did not submit a comprehensive documentation of the complex of buildings. Only in the sixties of the 20th century the work was taken up again in 11 seasons under the direction of P.L. Shinnie. While the first 7 seasons were documented in volume 4 of Meroitica* the present volume describes all the work carried out in the eighth to tenth seasons together with the ironworking area excavated in 1969-1970 und 1973-74. Of the final season 1983-84, temple M292 is reported on here, but the publication of the missing seasons will be reserved for a separate report.
