Waste Stabilisation Ponds

Various forms of waste stabilization pond are in widespread use as a reliable, efficient and economical method of wastewater treatment. The technology is the focus of active research and development efforts worldwide and in response to the growing significance of this work the 5th conference of IWA's Waste Stabilisation Ponds Specialist Group was organized in collaboration with IWA's Specialist Groups on Use of Macrophytes in Water Pollution Control and Design & Operation of Small Wastewater Treatment Plants. After rigorous peer review 37 papers have been selected for these proceedings, covering the following topics: case studies; pond biology; pathogens; nutrients; hydraulics; modeling; anaerobic ponds; high-rate ponds; agricultural and industrial waste ponds; ponds and wetlands; ponds and small wastewater treatment plants. With this range from practical studies of pond systems in full-scale application through to modeling and advanced research into the microbiological and physical processes involved, these proceedings constitute an unrivalled high-quality survey of the science, technology and performance of waste stabilisation ponds.
