Risk Management in the Legal Profession

Pat Archbold Pat manages IntApp's Risk Practice Group and focuses on helping law firms address issues including client confidentiality, regulatory compliance and risk management. Pat has presented at several law firm risk events internationally. He currently co-chairs the United Kingdom's Confidentiality Working Group, a consortium of law firms collaborating on the development of industry standards in response to evolving regulatory rules guiding information management practices. Additionally, Pat chairs a regular series of peer risk discussion forums held periodically across the United States as part of the Law Firm Risk Roundtable program (http://www.RiskRoundtable.com). Prior to joining IntApp, Pat served as regional vice president for Open Text Corporation's Legal Business Solutions division. In that capacity, he worked with a wide variety of firms to meet their records management and compliance objectives. He has over 15 years of legal industry experience, including leadership positions with a legal consulting organization and West Publishing. Nancy Beauchemin Nancy, president and founder of InOutsource, started the company in 2002, in direct response to law firms' need for objective consulting in the area of client intake, conflicts due diligence and records management. Having spent more than 20 years working with law firms, she realized that they were challenged with how to best update their information management processes given rising costs, new technologies, changing legal statutes and general risk issues, and needed help in creating an infrastructure that allowed them to efficiently perform conflicts due diligence and subsequently open and manage client files. Before InOutsource, Nancy developed her document and information system expertise through various sales and management positions providing products and services to the legal industry. Nancy has earned the prestigious Certified Records Manager (CRM) designation from the Institute of Certified Records Managers, and is a member of ARMA International. She holds a B.S. Degree from Northeastern University. Nancy frequently speaks to legal professional groups on the risk and ethical issues of managing law firm records. Nancy has authored several articles for legal and information management publications. Meg Block Meg has over 25 years of experience consulting to the legal community and leads Baker Robbins' Records Management and Compliance solution lines. Her primary specialties are business process reviews and the design and implementation of enterprise-wide information programs, including new business intake, conflicts of interest, intellectual property docket, litigation case management, and records management. She is a member of Baker Robbins' Information Life Cycle Management Group where she teams with e-mail and document management experts to develop practical and About the contributors X defendable digital records management strategies. A frequent writer on these topics, Meg holds a MS in Information Science from Syracuse University. David B. Cunningham David is managing director of Baker Robbins & Company and leads the firm's Strategic Technology practice. For 18 years, he has helped law firm leaders with assessments and plans focused on cost, risk, and lawyer effectiveness. He created the Law Firm Technology Scorecard to provide a fair and in-depth approach to benchmarking IT and the Law Firm Risk Register to support a more comprehensive approach to risk management across the business and practices of law. David has led some of the most complex law firm planning and merger projects across the US, UK, Germany, France, and Hong Kong. Julia Graham Julia is the chief risk officer for the international law firm DLA Piper. Julia facilitates the firm's Risk Committee and is architect of the firm's 'enterprise' approach to its risk management framework, as well as the firm's Compliance Officer. Enterprise risk management at DLA Piper embraces all categories of risk from legal and regulatory to business continuity and safety and information security. Julia's brief includes procurement of all classes of insurance cover, and she is a Board member of the firm's off-shore captive insurance company. Previously Julia worked in the insurance industry for over 30 years, ten of which were as the head of Group Risk Management for insurance company RSA. Julia was Chair of the British Standards Committee responsible for developing the British Standard for Risk Management (BS 31100) and the immediate past Chair of AIRMIC, the association of insurance and risk managers which represents the majority of FTSE 250 companies in the UK. Julia is an FBCI, FCII and Chartered Insurer. Ann Ostrander Ann has been in the risk and information management industry of law firms for over 20 years. She has held several roles at various law firms directing and managing the risk management functions, as well as general office administration. During her career, she has also worked as a senior consultant advising AmLaw 50 firms on the technology that supports conflicts, new business intake, records management, docket, audit letters, Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission (ARDC) registration, lobbying activities, human resources and general law office administration. She has been involved in the development of educational offerings for many conferences and is a frequent speaker and author for both ARMA International and the International Legal Technology Association (ILTA). She is currently the senior director of loss prevention for Kirkland & Ellis LLP. John J. Sroka John directs Duane Morris's Information Services Department, overseeing all aspects of technology-related initiatives, including practice support, web development, help desk, training, telecommunications and network services. John is an information technology professional with 30 years of experience in law and professional service firms, insurance operations, strategic and tactical planning, systems design and project management. He is a former vice president of strategic consulting and business development of a national professional services company. During the last 20 years, he has directed the technology departments of four major law firms.
