Description
What would be the effect of an American withdrawal from Europe in economic and military terms, should that ever come about? This book addresses this question to help clarify the debate about burden-sharing within NATO and the nature of the commitment of the USA to Europe. Taking into account the attitudes of both the USA and host countries, the book examines the costs and benefits of the USA's installations in Europe. It compares the military gaps in northern, central, and southern Europe that would be created by a withdrawal. It explores the problems that would be faced by western Europe in the event of an American withdrawal and asks how the USA could fulfil its global responsibilities without its European bases.
