Description
African marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) belongs to the family Asteraceae and is native to North and South America especially Mexico. Other species of this genus are Tagetes tenuifolia L. (Striped marigold), Tagetes lucida L. (Sweet scented marigold), T. patula (French Marigold) and T. minuta (Perfume marigold). Marigold is one of the most important annual flower to cultivate and has wide adaptability to different soil and climatic condition. Its bloom naturally occur in golden, orange, yellow and often with maroon highlights. The plants with their attractive flower colours bloom for a considerable long period and show remarkably good shelf life when cut. All these favourable characters make marigold one of the most popular annual flower in India for garden display as well as for commercial production.
