Economic Development in Africa

John Sender is Emeritus Professor of Economics (SOAS). He has taught and worked at Cambridge, SOAS, Wits, and Leiden, as well as acting as a consultant to the World Bank, ILO, UNDP, IFAD, and other organisations. He has written widely on economic development in Africa, including Sender and Smith (1986), The Development of Capitalism in Africa (London: Methuen); Sender and Smith (1990) and Poverty, Class and Gender in Rural Africa: a Tanzanian Case Study (London: Routledge). Christopher Cramer is Senior Lecturer in Political Economy (SOAS) and Chair of the Centre of African Studies (University of London). He has worked in South Africa and Mozambique as well as teaching at SOAS and Cambridge. He has acted as a consultant to the World Bank, ILO, UNDP, FAO, EC and others. His publications include Cramer (2006), Civil War is Not a Stupid Thing: Accounting for Violence in Developing Countries (London: C. Hurst); (with Sender and Oya), (2005), "Unequal Prospects: Disparities in the Quantity and Quality of Labour Supply in Sub-Saharan Africa" (World Bank); and (with Sender and Oya), (2006) "Women Working for Wages: Putting Some Flesh on the Bones of a Rural Labour Market Survey in Mozambique, Journal of Southern African Studies. Carlos Oya is Lecturer in Political Economy of Development (SOAS) teaching in the Political Economy of Development and Economic Development of Africa MSc courses. He has worked for several years in Senegal and Mozambique, as a researcher and economic advisor to the government. He has done consultancy work for the World Bank, UNDP and the governments of Mozambique, Angola, Mauritania and Zambia among others. Deborah Johnston is Lecturer in Economics (SOAS) and has been responsible for the Economic Department's African economics programme for three years. She has worked in Lesotho, South Africa and Sudan, as well as teaching at SOAS and the University of the Witwatersrand Business School. She has acted as a consultant to World Bank, DFID and African Development Bank, among others. Her publications include (2005, co-edited with Alfredo Saad-Filho) Neoliberalism: A critical reader, (Pluto Press) and (2004, with Sender) 'Searching for a Weapon of Mass Production in Rural Africa: Unconvincing Arguments for Land Reform' Journal of Agrarian Change.
