Description
In the second half of the eighteenth century, the category of the sublime became a central concept of the fledgling field of aesthetics. Originally located at the margins of discourses on rhetoric, it became a source of fascination in literary and artistic production, but quickly proved to be a complicated matter, especially for the visual arts. Artists and philosophers contended with the question of whether the sublime can be depicted at all or whether the events that can cause viewers to experience the sublime can be adequately represented in painting. The contributions of this special issue suggest, however, that the contested visual representability of the sublime might have spurred visual artists to devise innovative, experimental solutions in the eighteenth and nineteenth century.

Arno Schubbach studierte Mathematik, Informatik und Philosophie in Darmstadt und Berlin. Nach dem Diplom in Mathematik an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin 1999 widmete er sich seinem philosophischen Promotionsprojekt zum Verhältnis von Subjektivität und Sozialität in der Phänomenologie sowie im Strukturalismus und Poststrukturalismus. Die Promotion erfolgte 2005 an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
Ab 2005 war Arno Schubbach zunächst als PostDoc am Nationalen Forschungsschwerpunkt "Bildkritik" (eikones) an der Universität Basel tätig, von 2009 bis 2014 hatte er ebenda die FAG-Assistenzprofessor "Theorie der Bilder" inne und leitete in dieser Funktion sowohl das eikones-Graduiertenkolleg "Das Bild als Artefakt" als auch zusammen mit Michael Hagner das Modul "Wahrnehmung, implizites Bildwissen und Erkenntnis". Die Habilitation im Fach Philosophie erfolgte 2013 an der Universität Basel auf der Grundlage der Habilitationsschrift "Die Genese des Symbolischen. Zu den Anfängen von Ernst Cassirers Kulturphilosophie".
Im Wintersemester 2014/15 war Arno Schubbach Fellow der Kolleg-Forschergruppe "BildEvidenz" an der Freien Universität Berlin, frühere Forschungsaufenthalte hatten ihn bereits 1999/2000 und 2010 an die Yale University und die Beinecke Rare Books and Manuscript Library (New Haven, CT, USA) geführt sowie 2011 an das Philosophy Department der Stanford University (Paolo Alto, CA, USA). Seit Frühjahr 2015 ist er als Dozent für Bildtheorie an der Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst in Basel tätig, seit Herbst 2015 zudem als Oberassistent am Lehrstuhl für Philosophie an der ETH Zürich.
