Die zwischen ein bis zwei Meter großen Zeichnungen des New Yorker Malers Mark Sheinkman zeigen in einen durchgängig dunklen Hintergrund gesetzte weißliche Schwaden. Man könnte an Zigarettenqualm, aber auch an Dunstwolken, Blumen oder Flechtwerk denken, wie die Direktorin des Museums Gegenstandsfreier Kunst in Otterndorf, Ulrike Schick, in ihrem Beitrag zum soeben fertig gestellten Katalog Sheinkmans schreibt, der nun zur ersten Einzelausstellung (8.2.-3.5.2009) in Europa erscheint.
Sheinkman erzeugt mit seinen Zeichnungen eine starke räumliche Wirkung, die Schwaden scheinen fast plastisch, greifbar zu sein. Dafür trägt der Künstler auf den Malgrund Grafitpulver auf und radiert so weit in die total schwarze Fläche hinein, bis diese wie ein Barytabzug anmutet und die Schwaden, als ob sie aus der dunklen Fläche des Papiers mit feinstem Werkzeug herausgemeißelt wären, ihre filigrane Wirkung entfalten.
Measuring between one and two metres, the large drawings by the New York painter Mark Sheinkman depict whitish plumes against a dark background. They remind one possibly of wreaths of cigarette smoke, but also clouds of vapour, flowers, or woven threads, as the Director of the Museum Gegenstandsfreier Kunst in Otterndorf, Ulrike Schick, puts it in her contribution to the recently finished catalog on Sheinkman, now published in accompaniment to his first solo exhibition (8.2.-3.5.2009).
Sheinkman creates a bold spatial effect with his drawings that renders the plumes almost plastic, tangible. In order to achieve this, the artist applies graphite powder to the ground and rubs it into the completely black surface until it takes on the appearance of a baryta print and the plumes appear chiselled out of the dark aspect of the paper, generating their filigree effect.
