Description
Despite improvements in dialysis technology, the mortality rate in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients remains high. Therefore, there is a pressing need for adequate basic and clinical research in this area by organizations active in this field. This publication contains state-of-the-art articles illustrating the breadth of research required to deal with the fundamental questions in the search for improved treatment and care of the dialysis population. Topics discussed include cardiovascular issues in ESRD, adequacy of dialysis, nutrition and infection. The articles emphasize the continuous operation that is needed between organizations, such as the Renal Physicians Association, the DKUHD and the American Society of Nephrology, to advance the knowledge in this field and ultimately lead to prevention of ESRD or at least to the improvement of morbidity within this population.
