Dentistry is ever changing science, new research and clinical experience expand the horizon of knowledge, with demand for advancement in materials and techniques. The primary goal of endodontic therapy is to create an environment within in the root canal system to allow healing and continued maintenance of the health of the periradicular tissues. Most common cause of endodontic failure has been attributed to incomplete obturation of canal space. The concept of obturation graves the basis of obturation, need, timing and extent of obturation. The importance of hermetic seal lies in obturation techniques with obturating materials. Starting from gold, other metals to the latest gutta percha, etc. various techniques with upcoming materials have allowed perfect root canal filling, with a hope to achieve total obturation. Traditionally gutta percha point combined with sealer has been the choice of obturation.With evolving trends in field of dentistry newer material and techniques are in practise having its pro and cons, which ultimately defines the success of root canal treatment. An attempt is in progress to explore the recent advances in root canal obturation materials and techniques.
