New Options for America derives from Mark Satin'sNew Options newsletter, begun in 1984. The newsletter received the Utne Reader's 1989 Alternative Press Award for General Excellence. Satin's other books include New Age Politics: Healing Self and Society and a novel, Confessions of a Young Exile. Satin has been a civil rights worker in Mississippi, cofounder and director of the Toronto Anti-Draft Programme, and cofounder and staff member of the New World Alliance, a national political organization that sought to go "beyond left and right."
