Description
Popular lowbrow artist Isabel Samaras' work is populated with pop culture icons, erotic tableaux based on mid-century TV shows, and riffs on the old master painters. This is the fist monograph to highlight her witty, sexy, surreal work. Featuring delightful and enlightening text from art writers Justin Giarla and Colin Berry, fellow-lowbrow luminaries the Pizz and Shag, and erotic novelist Lucy Blue, "On Tender Hooks" is at once a serious contribution to the world of contemporary art books and a hell of a lot of fun.

Isabel Samaras is best known for her lush and meticulously painted riffs on works by Old Masters that send up pop culture icons of the 70s. Her ribald images are woven with references to classic horror movies, ancient mythology, cheesy television, and childhood fables. Familiar to a broad audience through publications like Juxtapoz magazine, her work has also been featured in the books Vicious, Delicious and Ambitious: 20th Century Women Artists; Pop Surrealism: The Rise of Underground Art; and Weirdo Deluxe: The Wild World of Pop Surrealism and Lowbrow Art (also from Chronicle Books). She has opened her studio to the television shows Internet Tonight, SexTV, Ooh La La, and the documentary film The Lowdown on Lowbrow. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
