Description
The 4th International Conference on ?Sewer Processes and Networks? developed on the themes of the three previous conferences in this series. Papers emphasised the fact that wastewater, biofilms and sediments in sewers are subject to important physical, chemical and microbial transformations and interactions, affecting the pipes, the wastewater treatment and the receiving waters via combined sewer overflows or separate sewer outfalls, and that the interaction of structural aspects with processes is central to the outcome. Following a full peer review 26 high-quality papers have been selected for these proceedings; they are divided into the following six themes: integrated approaches; water quality, hydraulics and hydrodynamics; wastewater characteristics and pollution removal; sewer solids ? characterization, transport and transformations; in-sewer processes ? aerobic, anoxic and anaerobic transformations; and infiltration in sewers. The gathering together of scientists and practising engineers in the area of environmental process engineering and management of sewer systems was highly successful in enabling them to present their results, express their views and discuss physical, chemical and biological processes in sewers, and related sewer structural aspects. The papers selected for these proceedings make a major contribution to a more comprehensive and multidisciplinary understanding of sewer systems performance, and any researchers, engineers or planners with an interest in the performance and impact of sewer systems will find these proceedings essential.
