Description
'David Sadler's book is the first in a new Pergamon Press series entitled Policy, Planning and Critical Theory. If Sadler's work is indicative of what is to come, then this series will provide a very welcome addition to the current literature...The Global Region would serve as an excellent introduction to those unfamiliar with this broader literature. A M Wood, Dept Geography, Ohio State, University Environment & Planning C: Government & Policy Vol 11 No 1, 1993 An increasing number of important daily decisions impacting on particular regions and localities worldwide are being taken in remote centres of international corporate power. This integration of localities into broader international circuits poses harsh challenges to both capital and labour. The Global Region examines the preconditions, development and implications of such challenges at the national/international and regional/national/international scales. Integration of the UK economy, represented by coal mining, iron and steel production and automobile assembly, into the global capital environment is examined through the strategies of major actors and the reasons for and impacts of particular state policies.
The focus then narrows to investigate the active and passive repositioning of the north east of England within the shifting international scene. As well as documenting a crucial period in the economic history of the north east and a sorry tale of intervention in the national and regional economy, the research emphasizes the interconnectedness of the global economy and its impact on the detailed course of different strategies in time and space. It also highlights the extremely narrow room for manoeuvre for all those living and working in the region.
