Description
Intended to serve as course material for advanced undergraduate or graduate programs, this volume presents English structure as a vehicle for the understanding of linguistic principles and as the target of acquisition in both childhood and adulthood. The book utilizes a problem-solving methodology, each problem graded by level of difficulty, and is designed to be used either by itself or in conjunction with other texts. Presupposing very little prior exposure to linguistic principles, the material is organized into a short preliminary unit and five main parts labeled: "Grammatical Constructs and Configurations"; "Grammatical Operations"; "Grammatical Relations"; and "Other Areas" (including "Word Formation"). The text aims to develop, through English, the user's skills in linguistic analysis, and the ability to read and understand the linguistics-based acquisition research literature. It is accompanied by an instructor's manual containing solutions to the problems, extended discussion and guidelines for use in a variety of instructional settings.
