Description
Structural optimization deals with the optimal design of all systems that consist, at least partially, of solids that are subject to stresses and/or deformations. Because of the increasing need to optimize discretized systems with many elements, the optimization of large structural systems is becoming an important disciplines in all branches of technology, including aerospace, structural, mechanical, civil and naval engineering, building science, energy technology and biomechanics. Applications range from space vehicles, long-span bridges and motor cars to artificial organs and sporting equipment, and more. This is the first of two volumes which examine structural optimization of large structural systems. Topics covered in these volumes include optimality criteria and topology optimization, decomposition methods and approximation concepts, neural networks and parallel processing.
