Images of the Gods

The myths and legends of the Khmers displayed in low reliefs in all the major temples in Cambodia, Thailand and Laos are examined in depth and richly illustrated. The most surprising and intimate stories of the gods and human figures of the great epics of the Mahabharata, Ramayana and the Puranas are brought to life in greater detail than ever before. A new emphasis is given to Buddhist visual narrative on the life of the Buddha and on the jatakas. In addition, unusual animal and humanoid creatures on the cusp between myth and fantasy, are illustrated.
