Description
Over the last two decades, a rich, diverse, yet sometimes contradictory body of research has been gathered under the general rubric of 'psychology of women'. This burgeoning literature represents several disciplines, among them psychology, psychiatry, sociology, political science, and women's studies. To bring sense to this agglomeration of views, both for the layperson and the student, the author looks at research in this area as a social process and refutes the notion that science can be objective about its search for universal truths. She asks us to refect on how we choose among explanations of behavior, calling the need to examine the psychology of women in a social and historical context. Throughout the book, Riger reveals how interpretive frameworks shape how we perceive research findings. Her central theme suggests that social factors shape the meaning and experience of biological femaleness.
Reviews / Votes
"Each chapter in Transforming Psychology offers a lucid exposition and analysis of a complex problem central to feminist psychology, with careful attention to diverse perspectives. Taken as a whole the book is an excellent guide to the progress feminist psychology has achieved, and the challenges that lie ahead. Bringing these diverse essays together in a single volume provides us with a handbook equally valuable to those new to feminist perspectives inpsychology (perhaps especially those struggling to understand the epistemological debates so clearly laid out here) and those eager for powerful 'real-world' application of feminist theorizing."-- Abby
Stewart, University of Michigan
"The strong, clear voice of Stephanie Riger provides a haven of rationality in the fog of p.c. Her lucid articles, gathered here for easy reference, have become classics in the field. Together, they make a cogent whole that points the way in building feminist organizations and creating healthy social policy." --Shulamit Reinharz, Brandeis University
"All feminist researchers can use this book. From Riger's classic 'Challenges of Success: Stages of Growth in Feminist Organizations' to her masterful coverage of sex differences, sex harassment and sex discrimination, the reader will find here the cutting edge of research combined with subtlety in insight and interpretation."--Jane Mansbridge, Harvard University
"Here is a volume that can and should be read by many, and at many levels. For the newcomer to women's studies, Stephanie Riger's smooth prose offers an excellent point of entry into the vibrant world of academic feminism. Meanwhile, in this superb collection, experts will immediately recognize how a lifetime of feminist scholarship has helped transform the social sciences away from arid games of dominance into true engines of education and liberation."--Faye
Crosby, University of California, Santa Cruz
"This book offers. . .a 'greatest hits' if you will---that bring together and organize highlights of her work in a way that will appeal to any audience. Those new to Riger's thoughts and ideas will quickly discover why her scholarship has been so influential in feminist psychology. Those familiar with her writings will appreciate a volume that gathers them together in a cohesive, integrated fashion. The text works both as an introduction to the issues and as
in insightful review and integration. New and informed readers will come away thinking about gender from a different perspective. . . Few will regret taking the time to consider and digest Riger's
ideas. Indeed, the text will likely be a well-used resource by feminist psychologists for many years to come."--Psychology of Women Quarterly
