Carrying his experiences from one social milieu to the other is proving dangerous, and having family in both the Iron Age and the modern means Danny is torn between the excitement of the past and his obligations in the present. Now that his cousin Tasgo is back in Seahome in the late Iron Age, where he belongs, they need to settle the resentments and mistrust that linger after Tasgo's long absence Underhill. Tasgo takes back control, meting out justice, and rebuilding friendships. Danny plays his part in regaining his place amongst folk there. Everyday life in the past seems good, and he fits in well.
Back in the present, Danny meets Kelly's fiance, Raife, who sees Danny as a potential rival.
Preferring the past, Danny goes back to Seahome and Tasgo, to find that all is not as settled as it seems, and the young warriors are more cunning than Danny realised. It seems some have been plotting against him, but it doesn't work out the way anyone planned. Lives are brutally changed, and Danny is not the only one left feeling devastated.
