Buildings of the Land

The story of the changing countryside of Scotland can be traced through its buildings. All the successive phases of agricultural development - from the 18th century revolution of 'Improvement' to the factory farming of the 20th century - are recorded in stone, concrete and steel.



This book, the result of a long-term research project undertaken by RCAHMS and the National Museums of Scotland, records farm buildings across the many regions of Scotland. The result is a volume richly illustrated with drawings and photographs covering a wide variety of building types, and tracing their evolution against the development of modern Scottish agriculture over the past 300 years. Susanna Wade Martins and Miles Glendinning, with contributors Peter Caunt and John Shaw, present a fascinating story of diversity and change, which will be of great interest to those concerned with agricultural, architectural, social and landscape history, and the future of Scotland's countryside.
