Description
Platelet rich fibrin (PRF) is a biocompatible fibrin matrix that acts as a resorbable membrane, which is a second-generation platelet concentrate developed from patient's blood. Unlike its predecessor, Platelet-Rich plasma (PRP), PRF is a fibrin matrix rich in platelets, growth factors, and cytokines. It is used in various medical fields to enhance tissue healing and regeneration. The platelets in PRF release growth factors, such as PDGF and TGF-beta, which accelerate the body's natural healing processes. These growth factors stimulate tissue regeneration, new blood vessel formation, and collagen production. Leucocytes provide an immune response to help prevent infection, while the fibrin matrix offers a scaffold that supports cell movement and repair at the surgical site. With its low cost, ease of preparation, and handling, PRF and its variants have emerged as potential regenerative materials with various applications in endodontics and other disciplines. Applications of Platelet Rich Fibrin in Endodontics includes - it can be used as a scaffold in regenerative endodontics, used an as apical plug, used in surgical endodontics and and in root end resection procedures for healing.
