Description
The aim of this book is to provide an up-to-date summary of sediment transport and depositional processes within an environmental facies framework. Emphasis in this text is placed on active processes and recent sediments, although samples from the ancient rock record are also provided where appropriate. The intention is to provide a clear statement of fundamental principles rather than a review of on-going research. It aims to supplement rather than replace existing texts on sedimentology and those which focus on sedimentary environments and facies, and is suited to third and fourth year undergraduates, postgraduate students and academics responsible for teaching courses in sedimentology. The discussion of sediment transport and depositional processes is based on an appreciation of the fundamental principles of fluid mechanics, of which a limited amount of background knowledge is assumed on the part of the reader. Although numerical parameters and sediment transport equations are used throughout the book, treatment is very much more descriptive than mathematical.
