Description
Success in mathematics and science requires students to process and comprehend various forms of text; yet, many teachers feel ill-equipped to promote the development of literacy skills within the context of developing conceptual understanding of mathematics and science. Many content area literacy resources do not provide an adequate development of the complexities involved in dealing with mathematics and science texts.
This work presents important background information on the reading and process and classroom tested strategies which include implementation information and ideas for modifying the strategy to diverse needs. These classroom examples support teachers and educational specialists as they design instructional experiences to facilitate both students' conceptualization of important subject area content and the tools necessary for students to develop the literacy skills necessary to be successful in today's text rich educational learning environments.

As the demands of standardized testing raise the bar for student learning in mathematics and science, teachers are seeking new and more effective instructional strategies. In Effective Content Reading Strategies to Develop Mathematical and Scientific Literacy: Supporting the Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards, Dr. David Pugalee makes the case for why students should be taught reading, writing and dialogue strategies in the mathematics and science classroom. He provides research studies and data that support specific strategies as part of a daily instructional routine to help students understand subject area content.Pugalee equips teachers with the essential background knowledge, tools, strategies and classroom examples they need to easily implement reading, writing and dialog in ways that are aligned to to Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. Mathematics and science teachers at all grade levels will be well served by this book; a must have! -- Susanne Teague, NBCT, M. Ed.,educational specialist, S2TEM Centers SC Reading is an integral part of everything we do. Many students gravitate toward mathematics because they believe it is possible to work in a field where reading is of lesser importance only to find out that it is a critical skill for both mathematics and science. This book outlines the steps necessary to facilitate the development of specific literacy skills for mathematics and sciences. It is helpful for both student and practitioner with clear relevant information. -- Connie S. Schrock, professor of mathematics, Emporia State University Dr. David Pugalee is a leading authority in incorporating literacy strategies in teaching and learning mathematics and science. Pugalee's book fills a void by supporting teachers and graduate students with the "why" and "how" to reading in these non-traditional subject disciplines. His writing style is clear and concise, and the strategies can be easily implemented to impact on student learning and achievement. -- Louis Lim, vice-principal, York Region District School Board, Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada
